This article is about the first case of the swine flu being spotted in Jerusalem, Israel. After confirming the virus yesterday morning, the Health Ministry raised its level of alert to four on a scale of six. Two israeli men, one 26 and another 47, were hospitalized when showing symptoms of the swine flu after both taking a trip to Mexico. Both patients will stay in the hosipital until tests are done. Over 150 people have died from the swine flu in Mexico and another 2,000 people are hospitalized with symptoms. The contagious flu has spread to the U.S. in states such as California, Texas, Kansas, Ohio, and New York. There have also been reported cases in Canada, New Zealand, and Spain. The economical impact this flu has on Mexico as of right now is bad because the parents can't go to work because they have no where to send their kids. The schools are closed until next wednesday and the daycares are most likely not open either because of the contagiousness. The parents are going to lose over a week of work and that is not the richest country.
I chose this article because I am very concerned with this harmful sickness and I'm not trying to get it. Its very close to us right now, like 60 miles away in NYC. Its scary and the only things we can do to prevent the flu is to wash our hands all the time and not share things with people. This is serious, like you can die from this so we should do everything we can to stay away from it.
No, I don't agree with what is happening in this article because people are getting really sick and the flu is getting spread so quickly. I don't understand how we got this disease from a pig, but it's crazy how it is affecting people. Hopefully, doctors can find a vaccine for this flu because it is spreading unbelievably fast and is deadly.
Yes, I do think the information is presented fairly. These news reporters are right on top of things and thats what we need because it is great to be notified where this disease is being spread to. We want to be prepared so we can take extra precaution.
Sure, I would choose this news source again. The news seems pretty accurate and true.
Sabrina, It's interesting you chose this particular source to look at the swine flu epidemic. You're right about the economic impact of the flu -- it could be devastating. I wonder whether there were other sources that covered that angle in more detail?
ReplyDeleteJTA stands for Jewish Telegraphic Agency (it took me a while to find that). It's a news source covering Jews all over the world, which is why this focused on the 2 swine flu cases in Israel. Did you catch the part where the rabbis didn't want to refer to it as the swine flu because pigs aren't kosher? I'm familiar with JTA because I edited a Jewish monthly newspaper in Dutchess County for a few years.
I agree that the report overall seems unbiased -- but I wonder what the fine line is between providing news with a Jewish PERSPECTIVE as opposed to a Jewish BIAS. (That question, by the way, would be true of any special interest news organization, whether it's BET, Al Jazeera, or Univision.)
